When the revolutionary band “Black Flag” adopted this name in 1979 as they began crafting the first chapters of hardcore punk history, they recognized the flag as a symbol of anarchy and rebellion against polite society.
The “Black Flag” is closely associated with Irish freedom fighter Bobby Sands and the Irish Hunger Strikes of 1981. Bobby Sands and the other men who gave their lives where commemorated by the waving of black flags. The “Black Flag” or the “flag of strikes” has long since been associated with the flag of the Working Class People under duress “living in the struggle”.
In our world today many people are negatively affected and left behind in the wake of greed and capitalism…..and while “we" being Black Flag will not solve world hunger - I guarantee that the few who join our Black Flag family will have a platform where their voice will be heard. We make music that the streets understand. I laugh when HIP HOP heads say something isn’t hip-hop - if it’s too violent or filled with “trap” like overtures. I would challenge them to go visit neighborhoods all throughout the United States where the middle upper class and super wealth classes have never ventured...it’s a wild world out there, and most Americans are living in hard times where their exposure to violence, discrimination and poverty are everyday occurrences. If you don’t speak the language or understand the street politics you lose the ears of this very important audience, and if you do that, how in the hell could you ever make a difference?
We let the artist on the label explain their reality anyway they see fit. "Black Flag" is the flag of strikes and the flag of those who are hungry." 1881. Louise Michel
Today, Black Flag Records represents a new generation of non-mainstream hip-hop artists, emerging from the South with a tight sound and an undeniable message. Underground Hip-hop is the blues music of our generation, using rhymes and beats as vessels to communicate a message and hopefully freeing many from the class of forgotten.
Black Flag Records main belief is to let the artist do what they do best - speak to us through their music...so enjoy the music.
